EMDR & Trauma Therapy · For Moms
EMDR therapy for
moms who feel stuck
You realise that you’ve now become the sort of mother you never wanted to be.

Nikolien Martina

You’re doing well.
And yet something doesn't feel quite right.
Perhaps you’ve been feeling it for years. A tension that won’t go away, even when everything is calm. Reactions to your children that are harsher than you’d like. Moments when something small takes you back to the past.
You’re not a bad mother. You’re a mother who carries around things she’s never properly come to terms with.
Trauma doesn’t necessarily have to be a major disaster. It could also be a birth that didn’t go as you’d hoped. A dream of having children that didn’t come true. An upbringing in which you were taught that you only mattered if you tried your best. A relationship that left a deeper mark than you’ve long been willing to admit.
They’re still in your nervous system. That’s why you react the way you do.
Beyond talking
How EMDR and trauma therapy work for mothers
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based treatment method for trauma, recognised by the WHO and the NIP.
The method does not work by talking about what happened. It works via the nervous system. During a session, you briefly activate a traumatic memory whilst simultaneously following a distracting stimulus: eye movements, sounds and cognitive tasks. Moms&More uses VR headsets for EMDR sessions in the clinic or an online EMDR platform for online sessions.
This causes your brain to process the memory in a new way. The emotional impact diminishes. You can look back on the experience without being overwhelmed by it.
The method, in a nutshell
- 1 · Activate
- You briefly recall a specific memory.
- 2 · Follow
- At the same time, you follow a distracting stimulus: eye movements, sounds, or instructions.
- 3 · Process
- Your brain processes the memory again, with less emotional charge.
- 4 · Integrate
- The experience is coming into its own. You’re responding to the present, not the past.
For moms, this means
- You’re less likely to shout. Not because you have better control over yourself, but because there’s less that needs controlling.
- Your children can tell that you’re really there for them.
- You’re no longer overwhelmed by something that, at first glance, seems to have nothing to do with the present.
- Your feelings of guilt about being a mother are starting to fade.
- Motherhood no longer feels like something you have to survive.
Five specialisms
What can Moms&More help you with?

01
Trauma related to pregnancy and childbirth
An emergency caesarean section that you haven’t come to terms with. A birth where you felt that nobody was listening to you. A miscarriage that was more significant than the outside world seemed to understand. EMDR helps you come to terms with these experiences, so that they no longer dictate how you view your child or approach a future pregnancy.

02
Unwanted childlessness and the loss of a child
The loss of the ability to have children is a grieving process that is rarely taken seriously. IVF treatments, repeated disappointments, the feeling that your body is letting you down. The same applies to the loss of a child. EMDR helps you process the pain and shock of these experiences, so that they no longer control you.

03
Childhood trauma and patterns
You recognise yourself in the way you react to your children. The way you deal with stress, set boundaries, or fail to set them. Much of what you do now was learned in a family where certain things seemed normal, but weren’t. EMDR helps you process those early experiences, so that you can make more conscious choices about how you interact with your own children.

04
Relational trauma
A relationship or upbringing in which you were systematically belittled. A divorce that has left its mark in ways that go beyond the legal settlement. Patterns of control, rejection or insecurity that you still feel on a daily basis. EMDR works directly on the memories underlying these experiences.

05
Motherhood as a trigger
Postnatal depression, maternal burnout, or raising a child with a disability or chronic illness. Motherhood itself can be a situation that brings old pain to the surface, or causes new pain that needs to be processed.

Stories from mothers who have gone before you
For years, I felt as though I was just scraping by. After a few EMDR sessions, I noticed that my reactions towards my children had changed because the tension had simply disappeared.

My labour had been tough, but I thought: other women have been through it too. It was only after EMDR that I realised how deeply it had affected me. Nikolien gets straight to the heart of the matter, without being harsh. That was exactly what I needed.
Anouk
Mom of a daughter
I came to Moms&More with childhood trauma that I thought I’d learned to live with. The difference after a few sessions is noticeable. To me, and most of all to my family. My children now have a different mum.
